  Today is Independence Day in Somalia, which was invaded by the French, the British and the Italians in the late 19th century. French Somaliland later achieved independence as Djibouti. In 1949 the UN gave Somalia as a protectorate to Italy until it achieved independence in 1960. The United Kingdom kept British Somaliland under its colonial rule.

  Somaliland is independent country in the Horn of Africa. Somaliland recieved independence from British on 26th June 1960 and joined with Italian Somalia to form Somali Republic. Today Somaliland is democractic with multiparty system, and held many elections in last 20 years. Dahir Riyale Kahin is the third President of Somaliland in less then 18 years. In 2007, after 14 years of service, he left the coast guard of Somaliland, a republic stretching along first Somalia's northern coast that declared independence in 1991. At the time, he said he could make more as a fisherman. These days, Abdullahi is sitting in a prison in Berbera, a city on Somaliland's northern coast, waiting for his case to go to trial.
